AFYCSO took over the internet in the early 2000s. Discovered on LiveJournal by Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz, Panic! quickly became kings of the MySpace and AbsolutePunk era. Wentz famously mused that they were like Fall Out Boy, but better, and quickly signed them to his own label.
Musically, AFYCSO was ahead of its time, which earned it early criticism. The band shifted things from straightforward pop punk into a layered, baroque (ornate and lavish) blend of electronic experimentation and pop madness.
Fueled lyrically by themes explored in novels like Invisible Monsters, Panic! still very much with their exclamation point at this stage, quickly found themselves a smashing success both on tour and across countless AOL profiles everywhere.
Heartache and breakups would follow. Their releases would ebb and flow, with the especially polarizing Pretty. Odd. dividing fans. But none of their later work ever reached the mountaintop that A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out claimed so effortlessly.
